The Lakota tribe call it ”Mavo Sica”, the french colonists ”Les mauvais terres pour traverse”, both meaning ”A very bad land to pass through” – more or less. And yes, during the 1800-hundreds it must have been quite a struggle to pass through the sand stone maze with no water and with extreme temperatures. With todays technology and lots of water it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth to visit.
The best time to visit is in the morning och at dawn when the shadows are long and the temperature more agreable. The landscape reminds us a lot of the landscapes in the Star Wars movies, so don’t be surprised if you run in to Yoda!
South Dakota is one of our favorite destinations and Badlands is always on our short list when we are there, aspecially since we learned that it was the hide out for Sitting Bull and his warriors during the late 1800 hundreds when they where fighting the army.
